Violet M. Smith, age 85 of Monroe, died Monday, January 9, 2012, at Park Centre in Newton. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the Monroe United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Zoar Cemetery. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Memorials may be directed to the Monroe United Methodist Church or Monroe American Legion. Condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.

The daughter of Frederick William and Rosa Marie (Tinnenmeier) Rethmeier, Violet was born on February 4, 1926, in Newton, Iowa. On April 4, 1948, she was united in marriage to Errol Smith in Baxter, Iowa. She worked at Maytag in Newton for 30 years prior to her retirement. Violet was an active member of the Monroe United Methodist Church. She also volunteered at the VA Hospital in Knoxville for 18 years, the American Legion and the Moose.

Those left to honor her memory include her siblings, Verna Ulrey of Monroe, Myrtle Foster of Corydon, Florence Foster of Allerton, Verne Rethmeier of Paola, KS, and Donald Rethmeier of Laurel, as well as several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband in 1986, brothers, Robert, Glen, Morris, Floyd, Darrell and Ralph.

I'm so sorry to hear of Aunt Violets passing. She was married to my Dads (Clarence) brother.We hadn't seen each other in many years, but will always remember her laughter and happy personality. Going to dances at the American Legion, and spending time at her and Uncle Errols house and on the farm. Great memories!!

To Violets Family, I started here at Park Centre as an Activity asst. about a year ago now. I was drawn to Violet though we never really spoke. I always knew it was a Holy Spirit connection, and I feel quite secure in knowing that she knew how much I loved her! I loved to sing to her, sit with her when Lou came to play piano nearly everyday. Her feet would move at times with the music, as well as when she would join us for Light and Lively excercise time. One morning the Lord awakened me with words/lyrics about for my friend, Violet. I quickly got up and began to write them as I felt inspired. It seemed as though it was her speaking to my heart. If you like I shall send you the lyrics. I have to work this weekend and will be unable to attend the service for her. I am originally from Monroe and found out from my Aunt Virginia Woody that Violet too was from the hometown. I also found out that Violets brother, Ralph, and his wife, were both our neighbors for many years on S. 3rd Ave. E. here in Newton. Yes, the world is indeed a small place, and I thank the Lord for your loved ones presence in my life. I loved her with all my heart. I stopped in to see her briefly last Sunday after church but had told her my goodbyes/see you again before that. I will see her again and I can envision her walking with Jesus and the angels.. it is where she belongs. May the Lord comfort you one and all!

I am so very sorry for your loss. Please know that God will comfort and sustain you. Psalms 34:18 says that He is near to those broken at heart and saves those crushed in spirit. He truly knows the pain you feel. He assures us at John 5:28 that a time will soon come when we will welcome back to our arms those we have lost. Know that time is very near. Allow God to comfort your soul until that day arrives. Please keep His promises close to your heart. I offer my deepest sympathies to your entire family.
