Violet M. Smith, age 85 of Monroe, died Monday, January 9, 2012, at Park Centre in Newton. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the Monroe United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Zoar Cemetery. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Memorials may be directed to the Monroe United Methodist Church or Monroe American Legion. The daughter of Frederick William and Rosa Marie (Tinnenmeier) Rethmeier, Violet was born on February 4, 1926, in Newton, Iowa. On April 4, 1948, she was united in marriage to Errol Smith in Baxter, Iowa. She worked at Maytag in Newton for 30 years prior to her retirement. Violet was an active member of the Monroe United Methodist Church. She also volunteered at the VA Hospital in Knoxville for 18 years, the American Legion and the Moose.
Those left to honor her memory include her siblings, Verna Ulrey of Monroe, Myrtle Foster of Corydon, Florence Foster of Allerton, Verne Rethmeier of Paola, KS, and Donald Rethmeier of Laurel, as well as several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband in 1986, brothers, Robert, Glen, Morris, Floyd, Darrell and Ralph.
