James D. "Doug"
Lowry
Jun 24, 1948 — Apr 1, 2023
James D. "Doug" Lowry, 74, originally from Mingo, died Saturday, April 1, 2023, in Yuma, AZ.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, April 28th at 2 p.m. Doug's family will greet friends following the service at the United Church of Ira, Iowa until 4 p.m.
The son of James D. "Jim" Lowry and Reva M. (Murphy) Lowry, he was born June 24, 1948, in Newton, IA.
He graduated from Mingo High School in 1966. He attended Iowa State University, then served in the United States Air Force, where he proudly played the tuba in the U.S. Air Force Drum and Bugle Corps. He enjoyed his travels abroad as a Staff Sergeant during the military but was called back to Iowa early to work on the family farm following his father's farm accident.
He had a knack for electronics, which lead him to a career at TWA Airlines in north Kansas City, MO, where he met his wife, Deborah Light, who he was married to for 18 years. His family and he later moved to Atlanta, GA, to continue his career in IT reservations as a network engineer. You might say he was intelligent long before intelligence was a thing!
He enjoyed reading, church activities, talking about his travels, and Iowa State University sports. He loved everything about the Iowa State Fair, especially all 4H exhibits, reminding him of when he received first place for his project, "How to Pack a Suitcase".
He recently used those packing skills to move to Yuma, AZ to be closer to his beautiful daughter Rachel, son-in-law Matt, and cat Dino. Although his time in Arizona was cut short, it was the highlight of his life following retirement.
Survivors include his daughter Rachel Lowry Maxwell (Matt); two brothers, Joe of Mingo, IA, Bill and Joni of Cummings, IA, three sisters, Jane and Gary Thomsen of Scottsdale, AZ, Merri Lowry of Ankeny, IA, Gerri and Don Heinrich of Urbandale, IA; Aunt Bobby Killion and Aunt Beverly Murphy; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the United Church of Ira.
