The son of Calvin Edwin Miller and Hazel Elvina (Smith) Miller, Jerry was born in rural Prairie City on June 4, 1945. He graduated from Colfax High School in 1963. Jerry served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. During Vietnam he repaired and flew helicopters. Jerry was always proud of his time in the Army and later joined the American Legion and AMVETS. On August 20, 1971, he was united in marriage to Sharon Hawkins of Monroe. Jerry worked for 35 years at Maytag and eventually retired in 1999. He was a longtime member of the Howard Street Christian Church.
Jerry was a hard worker who found joy in helping others. There weren't many strangers in his life, he loved to talk with people. In his free time, he enjoyed tinkering with cars and tractors, tilling gardens and mowing yards around Colfax, volunteering at the Colfax Senior Center, and spending time with his beloved dogs. Above all things, family was what he loved the most. His three grandchildren meant the world to him, and his greatest joy was being their grandpa.
Those left to honor Jerry's memory include his son, Calvin (Anna) Miller; his grandkids, Alice Miller, Kai Miller, and Hayden Miller; as well as his siblings, Phyllis (Jesse) James, Fred (Joan) Miller, and Connie (Dwaine) Bos. Preceding Jerry in death include his wife, Sharon; his parents, Calvin and Hazel Miller; and one sister, Lois Young.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Howard Street Christian Church. Memorials can be left at visitation or mailed to Coburn Funeral Home, 24 W Howard Street, Colfax, IA 50054.
