Shawn
Sunvold
Dec 2, 1962 — Jan 2, 2026
Shawn Sunvold, age 63, of Monroe IA, passed away on January 2nd, 2026 in his home. Born on December 2nd, 1962 in Sleepy Eye MN, he was the beloved son of Phillip & Jacqueline Sunvold. He grew up in Arlington MN with his sister, Kelly, and two brothers, Todd and Mike. Shawn met Sue Venteicher in college and decided she was the one for him. They married in Morgan MN on May 6th, 1989.
Shawn was a devoted family man, shown in his personal life as well as his 20+ years at Johnston Community School District. He took great pride in his role as a father, husband, brother, uncle, in-law and friend. He found his greatest joy in supporting his children alongside Sue—from cheering their academic successes, to the sidelines of their sporting events, to simple daily moments, Shawn was there celebrating every milestone along the way. Any time Shawn spoke to others about his children, he was grinning ear to ear and visibly filled with pride. He and Sue were, and will continue to be, their biggest fans and most dedicated supporters. Shawn was a sports enthusiast. His children always had Dad as coach. From soccer, basketball, football, and baseball, Shawn was always the first parent to spearhead the coaching
endeavours. He always taught kids to learn and slowly fall in love with whatever sport they were involved in. With all three of his children choosing to attend Central College, Shawn quickly became an unofficial recruiter and die-hard Dutch fan. Any time you saw him, he was probably repping his newest Central Dutch shirt with a fresh pair of Hokas.
For those who knew him, he will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, encouragement, and the steady love he gave so freely.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; daughter Kayla Sunvold of Charleston SC; sons Daniel (Sarah) Sunvold of Saratoga Springs UT and Logan Sunvold of Coon Rapids IA; siblings Kelly (Bob) Vanaman, Todd (Dana) Sunvold, and Mike Sunvold; as well as countless in-laws, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews too many to list. He was preceded in death by his mother Jacqueline and father Phillip.
Shawn's life will be celebrated this coming weekend at the First Baptist Church at 810 S Commerce St, Monroe IA. A visitation will be held Friday, January 9th from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 10th at 10:00 AM with viewing available at 9:00 AM. Shawn's final resting place will be at Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.
