It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Shirley Enyart. Shirley passed away peacefully at Addington's Place on Saturday, October 31, 2026.
She was born on May 31, 1930, in Prairie City, Iowa, to Harold and Mildred (Neff) Jennings. After graduating from Prairie City High School in 1948, Shirley attended the Iowa Lutheran School of Nursing. On February 16, 1951, she married the love of her life, Gordon Enyart. Following her graduation, she joined Gordon at Camp Pendleton in San Diego during his service in the Marine Corps. After his discharge in 1953, they settled on the Neff family farm southeast of Prairie City.
Shirley dedicated 35 years to the Labor and Delivery Department at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. In her retirement, she enjoyed spending time outdoors mowing, as well as canning sweet corn and green beans. Shirley was known for her delicious cooking, helping serve meals to the Lions Club, ISDTA Judges, and the Masonic Grand Lodge. Her home was always open, with cookies ready for coffee time-grandma never ran out of cookies and kisses.
Shirley and Gordon loved traveling to northern Minnesota for family fishing trips, creating many fond memories. She also enjoyed playing cards and reading, often reading the last chapter of a book first to see if it was worth reading. Shirley was an avid supporter of her children, Doug and Doreen, during their high school activities, and later attended as many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's events as she could, including soccer games, dance recitals, and volleyball matches. Her "greats" brought her immeasurable joy. Shirley was baptized at the Prairie City United Methodist Church and faithfully attended her entire life along with being a member of PEO.
Shirley is survived by her children, son Douglas (Kathleen) Enyart of Monroe, IA, and daughter Doreen (Michael) Pearson of Prairie City, IA; grandson Scott (Jaci) Enyart of Altoona, IA; randdaughters Andrea (Christopher) Dana of Pella, IA, Michelle (Benjamin) Cole of Urbandale, IA, and Beth (Robert) Baetzel of Alsip, IL; and eight great-grandchildren: Hannah and Zoe Enyart, Anderson and Leilani Dana, Sarah and Maryn Cole, and Matthew and Peyton Baetzel. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Mildred Jennings; her parents-in-law, Esten and Mildred Enyart; her brothers, Jon Jennings and Robert Jennings; and her sister-in-law, Eunice Jennings.
To honor, celebrate, and remember a life well lived, a Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, November 4th, at 4:00 PM at the Prairie City United Methodist Church, followed by a time of fellowship and visitation from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shirley Enyart Memorial, which will be distributed to the Prairie City United Methodist Church, Addington's Place, and P.E.O.
