Condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com. The daughter of Clyde Earl and Rose Ann (Wolver) Thomasson, "Vi" was born on June 11, 1926, near Monroe, Iowa. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1944 and was the last living member of this class prior to her death. She was a member of the National Honor Society in high school, and loved playing basketball not only for her high school team but post graduation for a Jasper County team. Viola worked for P.A.G. Seeds after her high school graduation as a secretary and married her boss. In August of 1946, she was united in marriage to Durward Belmont Carter (DB to most, "Butch" to her) in Troy, Kansas. Vi was a dedicated wife and stay-at-home mother. She enjoyed outside duties, particularly gardening (and canning) and planting flowers. Five children kept her plenty busy, but she managed to participate in a weekly bowling league, numerous golf outings at Gateway Recreation and attending Hawkeye football games with Butch. Vi relished being a grandma and great grandma and her lasting legacy is the value she placed on family throughout her life. Those left to honor her memory include her children, Les (Marcia) Carter, Pella, Iowa; Clyde Kirk (Cindi) Carter, Monroe, Iowa; Lois (Dave) Blankenship, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Zoe Carter Bishop, Castle Rock, Colorado; and Kevin (Jill) Carter, Arlington, Massachusetts. Ten grandchildren: Erin Carter (Shane), David Carter (Deniz Aksoy), Carrie Blankenship, Troy (Marcia) Blankenship, Ellie (Tyler) Reagan; Dylan (Cassie) Bishop, Tanner Bishop; Alivia Carter, Mitchell Carter, and Grace Carter. There are nine great grandchildren, and many great grandpuppies and grandkitties. She is also survived by nieces, Shelley (Mike) Rickabaugh Zarling, and Sherri Rickabaugh, both of Des Moines, Iowa. She has a nephew, Steven Carter (Donna) of Champaign, Illinois. Preceding Viola in death were her parents, husband "Butch" in 1993, and three sisters, Nellie Strickland, Lula "Tootie" Simbro, and Gladys Rickabaugh Snook.
