A lifelong resident of Vandalia, Walter was born to James and Rebecca (Pulver) Daugherty on February 2, 1924. He would go on to live in this same house for the rest of his adult life. He was baptized into Christ while on leave from the service. Walter entered the United States Army on March 6, 1945, and he was proud to serve his country. Upon his return home, he worked with his brother Glenn doing various construction jobs, even helping to connect houses to electricity lines for the first time in Jasper County. Walter spent time at McKlveen Lumber and later as a janitor at Southeast Polk. He worked hard wherever he went. On October 27, 1962, Walter was united in marriage to Rachel Johnson at the Vandalia Church of Christ.

In his spare time Walter enjoyed gardening with Rachel, cooking, baking, going to the Iowa State Fair, and learning about the history of Vandalia. Walter's life revolved around Christ. He was a member of the Vandalia Church of Christ for all of his adult life and helped by leading songs, offering prayers, and reading scripture. He dearly loved his Christian family, and his convictions and steadfast faith will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Those left to honor Walter's memory include two nieces; Verlee Covington and Marilyn Conrad, as well as many great nieces and great nephews.
