Mary was my Iowa Mom when my parents divorced, I was 4 my Father was a single Dad and would send my brother Wes and I to Iowa for the summer or Christmas break. Mary showed me what a Christian & a Mom looked like in God's eyes. Throughout my childhood she always spoke of Jesus, and the relationship he wanted to have with me. I was 33 when I asked Jesus into my heart and life, and after I did Mary was the second person I called to share the news. My whole life Mary and Yea where my image of what a Godly marriage looked like, I have that in my life, and I am grateful that they showed me, without pressure but patient love and caring. And for that I know I will see them again. There were only 2 people in my life that I allowed to call me 'Curty' Mary Hunter & and my grandmother Leah Aikin, because their Love was unconditional, mind you they didn't always like me, but I knew they Loved me. God Bless you Mary for bringing me to Christ. I love You! Please tell Yea I miss him. (PS- I attempted to write this earlier, but I can't find it so this tribute is Version 2.0). I have posted a Picture of Mary 'Curty' and Yea, at my fathers gravesite.

CandleMary! Her name is synonymous with kindness, caring, talent, energy, passion, fun and a very loving heart. I feel fortunate that I was able to visit her a few weeks ago. She loved our little town of Colfax and added so much to it over the years with her very giving heart. Glenna, you were so devoted to her and because of that loving devotion she knew that she had your beautiful spirit guiding her in these final months-what a comfort that must have been to her. She leaves a wonderful legacy for anyone that was lucky enough to know her. Condolences to everyone who loved her. She’s leading that angel choir with gusto! Julie Stinson Heatherly

Mary Butler Hunter was a beautiful, kind, generous, and talented lady. She was always working for the betterment of Colfax. I don't think she knew a stranger. It always made my day better when I saw her. She just added a little sunshine with her smile. Love you Mary

Mary Butler Hunter was a beautiful, kind, generous, and talented lady. I met her when I was five years old. Typical of her generosity, she came to my house when I was sick to bring me music for the church Christmas program (we sang Away in a Manger that year), and I have happy memories of singing in the church choir when I was in high school.

Mary was generous with her time and talents. She had a beautiful singing voice and led the Methodist choir for decades, also singing at weddings at funerals. She taught Sunday School, served on church women’s groups, and helped with youth activities. She taught my mother in law, Marian Garrett, how to drive in the 1950s, and she began sending my husband Craig candy at Christmas when he was in college. That fabulous tradition continued after college and as our family grew; she sent us a big box of her home-made Christmas candy every year for over 40 years. Our children knew Christmas was near when her chocolate-covered cherries arrived, and, to be honest, Craig and I eagerly anticipated them as well. After our daughter Megan grew up, Mary taught her how to make some of these complicated delicacies.

Mary was a determined booster for the City of Colfax, collecting memorabilia, and working on committees to keep the city thriving. She was proud of every upgrade to streets, lamp posts, and city parks. She spent tireless hours working for the high school alumni association, and, until her health failed a few years ago, never missed a banquet. Mary was one of my heroes. Rest in peace, Mary, I love you to pieces.
